Help please!

I'm a relatively new knitter who has figured out that I have been able to rise to new challenges by trying harder projects. And.... I'm stumped. I'm making my first sweater ever, and it's the EZ February Baby sweater on 2 needles. I understand the pattern, got the increases just fine, but I've never done sleeves.

This is the part that confuses me:
At 41/2 inches, work 25 sts then work 25 sts back and forth on the next 28 sts (plus 7 sts cast on at each end of them, 42 sts in all) for about 4" for sleeve, ending with 1" of garter stitch.

What does that mean? Also, I've seen here that it is an helpful trick to add an extra stitch at the end for seaming. So, cast on 8? On both sides?

Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

  • It really is that simple, just knit 25 stitches and then turn, leaving the stitches on the left-hand (which becomes the right-hand) needle. Knit the 25 stitches and turn again, and so on, making a fatter part in the middle. Often with knitting that seems incomprehensible when you read the instructions, if you just pick up the needles and do what it says, it all happens magically and you realise that there really is no other way to describe it, it just deosn't make sense until you have the needles in your hands. I still re-discover this from time to time, and I've been knitting for years.

  • ok, this is what i did...

when i got to 4.5", i worked the first 25 stitches (4 edge garter stitches + 3 repeats of the pattern for a total of 25 stitches). i then put the next 28 stitches on waste yarn which is your sleeve. then i worked across the back and put the second sleeve on waste yarn as well. i finished the body THEN came back and did the sleeves, casting on an extra 8 stitches on both sides of the sleeve (7 for the pattern and 1 stitch for seaming.) it's not what's written in the pattern but it certainly worked for me! it's also how i've always down top-down raglans (finished the body first THEN gone back and done the sleeves.)

  • At what point do you cast on the 7 (or 8 stitches) Do you knit across the 28 and then cast on the 7 or 8 and then knit back and cast on the other 7 or eight. I am doing something wrong here. I did put markers in every 14 stitches though as its easy (for me) to make a mistake in the pattern and not spot it until the end of the row

  • Thanks, Helen and gleek... that does make more sense.

But yeah, then where do you add the 7 new stitches?

I'll be sure to post updates with pictures! I'm using a color that I just adore.

  • i did not add on the extra 8 stitches on either side of the sleeve until i was done with body and had gone back and picked up the sleeves from the waste yarn.

  • after i picked up the sleeve stitches from the waste yarn, i casted-on 8 stitches at the beginning of the row, knit across the sleeve stitches in pattern and casted-on another 8 at the end. purled back across and continued on in pattern.
