Another mystery blanket

Having knitted one mystery blanket a wee while back I knew straight away which blanket would be on the agenda, when my sister-in-law said that she would like a knitted pram blanket for my niece. I really enjoy this pattern and it being my second attempt I decided to change the method a tiny bit. I knitted six large squares and when knitting the edge on them I continued the increases in the corners right to the last row. I assembled all the squares and continued knitting a border around the assembled squares. A couple of rows before the end I increased the amount of stitches by about 50% to amass an enormous amount of stitches and make a nice fluted edge.

I didn't have a chance to wash and block before handing the blanket over as it was in use practically before the last end was sewn away!

I have a few more pictures on my blog, if it's of any interest. I can heartily recommend this pattern as it can be knitted in any yarn, any colour, any size etc. I am pretty sure this won't be my last mystery blanket!

April Mystery Blanket - finished!

It's a while since I've posted anything here, but I'm back and this time with a new item I never knitted before, namely the April Mystery Blanket.

I love the geometry of this blanket (please note the way my two photos above and below almost square up!) and am already minded to knit another one for a Christening in June.

The squares are knitted in cotton and the edges in cotton chenille.

The finished product is machine washable, soft as a baby's bottom and does not curl and wave as badly as the picture indicates!

All the details of materials etc can be found on Ravelry, where surprise, surprise I'm known as teeweewonders and other pictures etc can be found on my blog.
Blogger is really playing up and I think this must be the tenth time I try to post this. Hopefully this will be my lucky dip!

mystery blanket

I'd like to interrupt the postings of baby sweaters to show you a Mystery Blanket. This is a (somewhat modified) version of the April project from Knitter's Almanac.

I've been fascinated with this pattern for a long time, and I finally had a chance to make it when I needed to make a baby blanket for my new cousin. For a long time now I've been thinking about the best way to join squares to make a blanket. When I read about this blanket, I knew I needed to try weaving the squares together. There are still some other ideas I have that I will hopefully try out on future projects, but this time I was looking for something that would work the first time. And it did work. I knit the squares out as the directions suggest, but I used different increases (I didn't want holes for the baby's fingers to get caught in), and added stripes to the squares. I also knit the blanket with worsted weight superwash wool instead of the bulky wool used in the pattern and made it smaller. And I used a regular cast-off because I wasn't trying to fool any knitters- this went to a non-knitting family. But otherwise, I followed the pattern.

I'm not thrilled with the way the colors came together- it's a little too much blue for me, even though it is a baby boy. But overall I'm pleased with it and I would certainly knit it again. The joins look neat and professional on both sides, which is more than I can say for any other blankets I have knit from multiple squares. And I think the garter stitch border works really well. And to top it all off, it was a quick knit!
