New Member and First BSJ

I am very excited to start my first BSJ. I ordered a kit from School House Press. The colors are coral and cream. I am getting ready to knit my gauge swatch but am unsure of what size needle to start with... I am a tight knitter... the wool is jumper weight shetland 6-10 sts to 1 inch
I am finding the instructions a bit different to what I am used too. But I amup for the challenge and I just love EZ.

Thx

  • is it for a particular baby. i would knit with the needles that makes the knitting look most pretty. the yarn has obviously a great varitation in gauge.

  • Hi McCallSA,

I'm a tight knitter too, and knit J&S Jumper weight on US 5s for Fair Isle (comes out about 6.5-7 st/in), but for Garter Stitch, I would probably go with a 6. As Knititch says, see what looks nicest to you. Remember too, that Shetland softens and blooms once it's washed for the first time. I'm envious that you still have the Baby Surprise to look forward to! Amy in Wisconsin

  • oh and the pattern which is more like poetry than a pattern did look very odd to me at first. especially since english is not my mother tongue. but as elizabeth says: knit on with confidence. and if you do as you are told (lol) it actually turns out to be a bsj. look at adrians post about the home spun bsj. she has photographed all the phases as i remember it.
