Help with Norwegian Mittens please...

I’m struggling with my first pair of Norwegian Mittens, and hope someone will be able to help - please…
I have increased the 10 stitches on the palm of the hand for the thumb. The palm of the hand is now 10 stitches wider than the back of the hand. Should I decrease above the thumb hole, or do I continue knitting with the wider palm, in which case the decreases at the top must end up looking a bit weird? HELP - please…

  • I have not seen the pattern, but I think the 10 stitches should be put on some scrap yarn. The increase is for the thumb hole. At least that is what the increase was used for in other mittens I have made. After the 10 stitches are separated I continued the knitting the fingertip portion of the mitten and then when that is finished the thumb is knit up. Hope this helps.

  • It sounds like you didn't do the decrease at the wrist. The palm side would be down to 13 stitches. The ten you add makes up the difference plus the 3 stitches for the start of the thumb. After you complete the increase for the thumb you should have the same on the top and palm of the mitten. Hope this helps. Romie

  • I don't have the pattern in front of me, but I always decrease above the thumb hole to eliminate the extra stitches I've cast on to rejoin the round. I find it's comfortable to have a little miniature, upside-down gusset above the thumb, so I do the decreases over several rounds. In a pattern where you've got colorwork charts to follow, I'd say do whatever you have to do to get the stitch count back to what works with the color pattern.
