Tomten and BSJ

This one took a long time. I kept stopping to make baby stuff for pregnant people. The buttons are from Yarn Diva in Hillsdale, NJ and the buttons matched perfectly.

I made it to match Griffin's (Sophia is my friend's neice and Griffin is my friend's son)

This one was for Grif...

The two are made of Jarbo Garn yarn.

My co worker, Mrs. B, who I adore is preparing for another grandbaby (number 3) so I started a baby surprise for that child.

Another BSJ

A new grandson meant a new BSJ! This one is knitted in 2 strands of Sassa Lynne hand-dyed medium perle. I chose 2 colours from the Serendipity range (unrepeatable and only available at shows) that seemed to go together and this is the result. I used 6 skeins, and there was enough left to make a hat and a pair of bootees too.

Lots of Pink Baby Surprise

I almost forgot to show you my finished Baby Surprise Jacket!

This one came together in no time, although I was more than halfway finished before I could figure out the right-side-upness of it.

I opted for pastel mismatched buttons.

This was knit with Katia Jamica yarn. The BSJ took about 1.25 skeins. I used another .25 of a skein for a improvised hat.

Roxie loves it (can't you tell?) I'm sure that the baby recipient will too.

Mom's new Baby Surprise Jacket and February sweater

Mom finished this cotton baby surprise a few days ago. She still needs to go button shopping. She and I both started the February sweater a couple of days ago. I had to tear mine up after countless mistakes and am taking a weeks vacation from it, but she is on the first sleeve using King Tut in this beautiful shade.

BSJ

Hi Zimmermaniacs

This is my first post, I have been reading the site for ages and finally have got around to joining the fun. I'm in the UK where so many people don't know of the talents of EZ, but I am doing my best to change that.

BSJ My very first EZ knit for my 18 month old daughter, done on 5mm with various DK-ish weight leftovers, I added an extra bit on the sleeve length, next time I'd do a provisional cast-on for the sleeves but as it was my first I needed to get my head around it! Betsy has been wearing it for a bit now and what I absolutely love - apart from the obvious engineering genius - is the shaping over the bum/nappy, so very clever. She wore it on our recent holiday to Cape Cod and got comments everywhere we went, more modelling pics over on my blog.

I have a February sweater almost complete and am contemplating my next EZ assignment, what to knit...

BSJ

And here is my first knitted BSJ in dark blue.
Yarn: Bergere de France Berlaine.
Knitted with 3 mm Ndls. I need 150 g (5,25 oz).
It was very interesting to knit. And I will knit some more BSJ and Feb sweaters in future.

A Surprise for Stefan

Between my first and second efforts, I'd begun to wonder if it would be completed by the time Stefan entered college. Thankfully, it's done, and my co-worker's newborn grandson is a mere one month old.

This Baby Surprise Sweater is a far better end-product that its predecessor. Though not perfect, practice has definitely made my second attempt at Elizabeth Zimmermann's classic design more uniform. Where is the first? That baby's long since been frogged, with the buttons & yarn set aside for yet another attempt.

In a nod to practicality (sorry, natural-fiber enthusiasts: I feel your pain, but frankly, I'm lazy, and loathe the very thought of giving a new mom some knitted up thing that requires special handling), I worked the sweater in Plymouth Encore worsted, a very soft 25% wool/75% acrylic, machine wash & dry yarn, and stitched it up on size 6 KnitPicks Options, in three perfectly neutral and Harvard-like (the kid's college-bound, you recall) colors: cranberry relish, stony beach, and natural.

My two disappointments: 1. That I was unable to use the splendid hi-gloss cranberry-colored five-point star buttons, as originally planned (yes, Child Protective Services, it finally dawned unwise to fasten sharp pointy objects onto infant wear); and 2. That I don't seem to have positioned the round and satiny alternatives very well. In the photo, you see that that they tug a bit, distorting the edge of the sweater? That's something I've got to work on in the future.

Still, I'm pleased, and just love those striped corners! All in all, this was a fun project, and one I'd happily do again.

My thanks to all the talented Zimmermaniacs who daily inspire me with their creative takes on Elizabeth's timeless designs. And, yes... welcome to the world, baby Stefan!

Baby Surprise Jacket

I think the subtitle for this pattern should be "What To Do With Leftover Sock Yarn." This one used up the remnants of some Opal and Baby Ulli I had around; I knit it on size three Addi Turbos. As you see, I only made four button holes (oops) and as you can see if you look closely, I made *lots* of mistakes. But I still love it; what an amazing pattern.

BSJ

I used Jaeger Baby Merino 4ply for this jacket and a 3mm circular needle. I had one ball of each colour and just wanted to make another of these special jackets. It's very bold for a newborn size and I almost ran out of the pink before I knew it! It's knitted up into a lovely bouncy fabric, just need a baby girl to go in it now! I think this looks a bit slimmer than other BSJ's that I've seen but I like it...
I used a crochet cast on for the sleeves of this jacket because I feel that the sleeves always look a bit too short. Not knowing how this yarn would knit up and how much extra length in the sleeves to knit, that would look right to me, I thought the crochet cast on would be a better option than knitting the extra length on the sleeves first and then incorporating them into the whole jacket. It worked out really well, I just picked up the stitches, did a decrease row and then knitted a cuff, this gave me the balance that my eye wanted.
I got the inspiration for the picot edging from 'A very Lilly BSJ ' I joined the seams using a 2 stitch icord cast off :^)

Baby Surprise Jacket

This is the Baby Surprise Jacket finally finished! So cute and soft! The yarn is self-striping Mondial Kinder Baby, 70% merino wool/30% acrylic.
It is a gift and I don't know if the baby will be a boy or a girl. This yarn has both pink and blue but was pretty heavy on the blues and green so I am hoping that it will look appropriate for either gender.
I enjoy this pattern so much. I think it is that it is pretty much mindless knitting. As soon as one is finished, I start thinking about which yarn to use for the next one. I want to cast on right away!
Come see what else I am working on at my blog
Denise
