Baby Surprise Jacket
Well, I'm going to jump on the bandwagon and finally knit a Baby Surprise Jacket. I've been searching for some appropriate yarn, and would like to make the jacket in a variegated cotton yarn. I am wondering what all of you who've BSJ'd before me would recommend for yarn? I read a post at one point on this blog where someone mentioned setting up a spreadsheet of yarn choices and what size bsj it would yield and wondered if anyone ever made such a spreadsheet?
Otherwise I would love to hear about whatever yarns anyone else used for the BSJ.
Oh--the Baby Surplice Jacket--is it only available as a Spun Out design or is the pattern available in one of EZ's books?
Thanks all!

I am currently making a BSJ, but I surprised myself by using a sock yarn ( Lorna's Lace washable wool) and using a size 4 needle to do this up in!
I thought I should probably make it larger but I wanted it for a baby due in May ,( as our summers are a tad cool) so baby really does needs something for those times.
Garter stitch is so so stretchy too!
That said, I did get about 6 st per inch in garter and its SO SO Soft and spring,,, that I absolultely would do one again in this yarn.
I never thought of using a sock weight yarn with a larger needle, but its working well for me and its SO stretchy~ I plan to make a little hat to match and booties if there is enough left.
I would do this again with the Lorna's lace yarn for a newborn ,but I will be upsizing using a heavy DK ( or ligth worsted) for a 6 month old on my next one.
I love the pattern , I could see it done up in any yarn, and especially in stripes or a hand dye~
I lean towards a machine washable wool for the mom and dads sake though.
Its a fun fun pattern~ I'm glad I started this little addiction!
I forsee myself making the Febraury sweater, as well as the Totem. Gotta knit them all!!!
Happy Knitting!

porto cervo from filatura di crosa has a variegated cotton in a heavy worsted or aran weight. i used that for a bsj for a girl. she used it when she was about 6mos. to add to the fun i used buttons from buttonmadness.com

there is a pattern for the baby surplice jacket in the springsummer vogue knitting international magazine, the one with the white lacey knitting on the cover. I am eager to make one of themmyself. I have made two of the BSJ's, one in Rown wool/cotton which was gorgeous and one in Jeager baby merino which came out a bit smaller....hope this helps.

I think the Baby Surprise Jacket is only available through Schoolhouse Press. I have 3 Zimmerman books and its not in any of them.:o(
I have a married nephew and they are hoping for children so I would love to have this pattern but haven't a credit card for ordering online. BooHoooo!

The pattern for the BSJ can be found in EZ's Knitting Workshop. It is available from Schoolhouse Press, but I got mine from Amazon.

There are two different jackets being discussed here. The Baby Surprise Jacket pattern is available in one of Elizabeth Zimmerman's books (an earlier commenter said Knitting Workshop)and as a separate pattern for $3 from Schoolhouse Press. The Baby Surplice Jacket is in the current issue of Vogue Knitting (although I suspect it will be replaced with a new VK summer issue soon).

I have a spreadsheet which charts out the pattern progression. It DOES NOT address the "different size yarn produces different size jackets" aspect to it, and that is a very interesting question.
You are all doing such lovely work on Elizabeth's patterns - I may have to join up! And it looks like many of you have taken up knitting in her spirit of independence and thinking about your knitting that she promoted.

I just wanted anyone interested in the baby surplus jacket to know this asap~
I called our local JoAnne's and they had PULLED the Spring/Summer issue of Vogue Knits yesterday!
I was then called around and located it at the Barnes and Noble nearby~
I suspect ( as was mentioned earlier) that many shops will be pulling this issue very soon ,so if anyone really wants it look for it soon!
( I do hope one could order this directly from Vogue later but that is never a guarantee)
Just wanted to update you all on this,,
I wanted the pattern so I did go and get it asap!
Happy Knitting!
