Ribwarmer Help!
I'm late to the party, but have fallen in love with EZ's philosophy and patterns. So here's my first WIP -- a Ribwarmer.
But, here's the rub. Did I screw up? Am I total maroon (ala Bugs Bunny) and start the short row shaping on the opposite side? The instructions say "long side", so does this re-shape to look like the diagram when the increases start? Any advice or words of encouragement for this knitter of 40+ years who is currently banging her head against the wall would be appreciated.

You've got it right! The long "panhandle" is always on the buttonhole edge. I found this seemingly simple pattern quite a difficult project at first--I took a class on Ribwarmer & Variations that clarified things for me. The real breakthrough came when I made a full-size pattern on that large gridded paper, then made notations for the gauge I was working in. Mental breakthrough!

You look to be right on target. I am working on a rib warmer too! A friend I work with has made 3 of them now, and they are really neat. She figured out a way to join the back so there's no seam. I decided to make mine according to the pattern, but tried shaping the collar. We found added directions in an article from the Fall/Winter 1986 issue of Knitters, pp.46-47, which I requested through Interlibrary Loan. I'm so happy to see a Rib Warmer appear on this blog, and would love to hear about others who might have made one.

I'd also recommend the Ribwarmer Spun Out from Schoolhouse Press (Meg Swansen). This little sheet covers lots of alternate shaping (at the armhole, the neck, the sides) as well as solid vs. seamed back.

I think that it does look backwards. In the line drawing, the tab or "panhandle" that forms the collar is on the same side as the curve that forms the front edge. Your collar seems to be on the straight side that will form the side seam.

I'm forging ahead, and will post a progress photo soon. Worst case, if the "tab" is on the wrong side, I can knit up where it's supposed to be, and rip down on the other.
The original pattern is in "Knitting Workshop." I think I'll order the Spun-Out modifications, as my library doesn't carry Knitters magazine.
I'm also thinking of an I-cord border ... maybe in a contrasting color.
