Zimmermania

Welcome!

Welcome to Zimmermania! This knitalong is for anyone who's curious about attempting an Elizabeth Zimmermann design for the first time, and also for longtime devotees who'd like to revisit a favorite pattern or try one they haven't before. It was born of Jess and Sarah's mutual desire to knit Fishtrap cardigans for our gentleman companions. We've created this space so you can share your progress, seek feedback, ask questions, and generally celebrate the challenges and triumphs of knitting EZ's way. So introduce yourself and tell us what you're going to be working on, and feel free to show us pictures of EZ projects you've completed in the past for motivation! Want to be added to the knitalong? Send an e-mail to sarah@bluegarter.org and you'll receive an invitation to join.

  • What a wonderful idea you had! I recently started making some of EZs patterns again. I made a lot of basic seamless sweaters for my kids when they were little. Now I have been trying out some of the other patterns. I am working on my 4th BSJ and want to cast on a second Pelerine, this one in lace.
Please add me to you knitalong!

I choose the EZ seamless saddle shoulder as my first sweater project. After two false starts (one involving a beautiful mobius strip-I'm used to socks so damn those 188 stitches, and another involving not lining up stitches properly when joining the hem...) I'm now off and running. I'm using Classic Elite Skye Tweed, knitting at 4 3/4 st/inch on #7 Addi circulars. We'll see if I can maintain that gauge.
I crochet cast on with 100% of stitches on size #5's.
    Anyway...
I love learning the proportions and the HOW's of why something is made a certain way...

I have been a fan of EZ since forever and keep watching the Knitting Glossary and Knitting Workshops over and again just to see EZ and Meg. When I can't sleep and don't want to knit, I reread her books again and again, too.

I know I am among the zillions of fans of her for lots of reasons. And I am quoted on page 62 of the Opinionated Knitter and my comments after Elizabeth died are online here: http://www.maggiesrags.com/eztribute.html.

I have knit a number of EZ sweaters -- no seams needed. And they always fit their intended. I want to start the Adult Surprise Jacket for myself. But it has to wait until I finish a raglan cardi for my secretary.

I will be knitting the 'Pie Are Square Shawl'.

I practiced the pattern last night and will be buying some Shetland Jumper wool this week.

I have not decided on the color yet...but I am delighted that the pattern was much easier than I first thought it would be :o)

This will be my first Zimmermann...
    and my first shawl!

I've read one book and ordered more to fill my head with the techniques of the master knitter. Most of my knitting is for my wife, teen kids and gifts like Secret Pal. Finishing up a top from Big girl knits and have lots of stash to burn through.

I recently ordered the Adult pattern from Schoolhouse.

I did alot of knotting when my children were small, put my needles away and after a 20+ year absence have picked them up again. I need to hone my skills for those "someday" grandchildren :-).

With baby Granddaughter Iree Piper coming along in about four weeks, I have several baby sweaters on the needles. Two are the little bog sweater and the BSJ. Also the Baby Einstein, all are adorable! Please let me know when I am (if I am) accepted and will post photos as completed. Thanks, Cheryl

  • Please sign me up for Zimmermania.
As the original owner of Foxyknits (Koigu for Koigu fanatics) I have knitted dozens of Baby Surprise jackets, in Koigu and in other yarns. Just finished a couple in Bendigo cotton/lycra (lovely) I also teach people to knit this jacket. I love to do an i-cord bind-off, and now I've seen the one with ruffled edge I plan to do that on my next one. Also I like to do an occasional YO K2tog row which makes a very simple and attractive eyelet pattern (esp good for beginning knitters who haven't learned to purl yet)

Thanks for the inspiration and the blog

  • Hi,

I am knitting the Pi Shawl with three lace patterns out of black Skacel merino lace yarn. It may come out smaller than I want, since the yarn is so fine. If so, I'll just keep knitting, make a wide border, or find use for a small shawl.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:28 PM

  • Hello,

Thank you for starting this blog. Am doing the BSJ and can't understand the part where you knit only the middle 90 stitches. How do you pick up the 10 and do another 26? The row is longer than that. I am clearly not understanding some part of the directions.

    Thanks

She told me about EZ so I bought all of her books at 50% off on www.knitpicks.com and I LOVE her and her technics of teaching without patterns. I am a very visual learner so this is right up my alley. After reading the digressions I so wanted to met her and cried when I found she died already. More then you needed to know. www.wendysmodestdress.com if I can begin to do with knitting what I have learned to do with crocheting I will be a very happy and contented person. Thanks, Wendy

It looks great in the pictures I've googled of it. Only problem is I've no grandchildren yet, but my daughter gets married in Sept 08 so I'm starting a babywear collection for her, just in case. She'll shoot me if she finds out! Please sign me up to Zimmermania! Thanks.

  • I really enjoy visiting this interesting website. It is inspiring to see everyone's wonderful work under the influence of the incomparable EZ.

However, I have run into many, many problems - incomplete page loading, failure to load comments, broken links, 404 errors, timeouts, failed comment posting - things I don't run into with such regularity anywhere else. It's very frustrating, and sometimes I just give up and go away! I wonder if these are host or server problems? I would love to have these problems solved so I can keep visiting in the future.

Thanks for a very engaging website. Knit on!

I have allways been an x rated girl and never found a mag or pattern for us triple xxx'ers but with elisabeths help i have knittted all the clothes i could want. omaeve@aim.com my blog is at http://journals.aol.com/omaeve/DISABLED-KNITTER/

I am sort of new to knitting. I have crocheted for years and have always wanted to learn knitting. It took awhile but I think I've got it.

I am knitting my third BSJ. I just love it. It is so adorable.

I've knit '3 rows even' and placed markers after k22 etc. The Dawn Adcock notes I'm using to help me along tell me to begin the next row by knitting 23, then M2, K1, M1, then knit 46 ... but I've only got 22 stitches before I'm meant to increase and 44in the centre.
